Self-Flagellating Nun
There’s apparently quite a history of self-flagellation in the church. The scourging of Jesus set the holy example, and there was seen to be a vital need to punish the sinful flesh and discipline the wayward mind, to suppress lustful and otherwise sinful thoughts. Presumably it indeed had an aversive power, like the folks who have learned to stop smoking by snapping a rubber band on their wrist every time they think of having a cigarette.
That said, somehow I doubt that self-flagellation in the church was often this pretty to watch:
