The Two-Martini Spanking
As is pretty common with old spanking cartoons, this one in the August 1959 issue of Gaze doesn’t make a lot of sense. The art is pretty, but the caption doesn’t tell us anything about what’s going on and it doesn’t appear to be funny. (I guess it’s what editors used to call a “weak gag”.) Still, there are two martinis, one half-drunk, within easy reach. So I’m saying it’s the classic scene where he came home from work, his wife had drinks ready, but for some reason, she went over his knee right after he took his first gulp of gin:

Yeah, see, that joke works if you assume that the wife has been belittling him, maybe for being too submissive (ha!) at work, for just being a follower, for being weak in some way. So he turns the table on her and takes matters into his own hands. He proves a point. Okay, nice. But there’s no setup, no indication that she’s been nagging him or whatever, and it just doesn’t work.
Or maybe it’s those glasses you mentioned. She thinks she’s being a good wife for having his drinks ready, but he finds it insulting for some reason, like he isn’t capable of pouring his own damn drink. So he takes matters into his own hands.
A stretch.
Cute illustration, though!
