Yes, the position looks awkward and uncomfortable, even impractical. But variations on it do have possibilities.
Imagine a girl standing on one leg as she is tied facing a tree. The other leg is bent at the knee, which is raised high and tied against the tree in that position. This offers good possibilities not only for birching, but also for easy penetration from behind by the male.
